The Application Philosophy
Temperature and timing are everything. Wax in the shade, always. Direct sunlight makes wax flash-dry before it can properly bond. Early morning or late afternoon are ideal – the paint should be cool to the touch.
I've developed a quarter-panel approach over the years. Work on one quarter of the car at a time. Apply to the hood, let it haze, remove, then move to the next section. This prevents the wax from baking on in summer or getting too hard in winter.

Plastic and rubber trim need attention too. Wax residue on black trim looks terrible – those white streaks that seem impossible to remove. Mask trim with painter's tape, or use a trim-safe wax. If you do get wax on trim, a pencil eraser removes it better than any chemical I've found.

Waxing isn't a one-and-done deal. It's ongoing maintenance, like changing oil. How often depends on your conditions. Garage-kept cars in mild climates might go four months between applications. Daily drivers in harsh climates need attention every six to eight weeks.
Between waxes, proper washing technique maintains the protection. Use the two-bucket method, dry with quality chamois or forced air, and consider a spray detailer for quick touch-ups. Those waterless wash products work in a pinch but shouldn't replace proper washing.
I keep a wax log for each car. Sounds obsessive, but it helps track what works. Different waxes perform differently on different paints. My black truck loves Collinite 915, while my wife's silver car looks best with Meguiar's Ultimate. You'll develop preferences based on your specific conditions.
