Meanwhile, imitation technology keeps improving. The latest synthetic pearls use multiple layers of different materials to mimic nacre's optical properties. They're getting weight, luster, and even surface texture increasingly right.
Trust, But Verify
If you're buying pearls as an investment or heirloom, get them certified by a reputable gemological laboratory. GIA, SSEF, or Gübelin certificates are your best bet. Yes, it costs money. Yes, it's worth it.
For everyday wear pearls, does it matter if they're real? That's a personal choice. I have friends who wear stunning fake pearls with more confidence than others wear genuine ones. The best pearls are the ones that make you feel fabulous.
