A properly installed water softener should last 15-20 years with minimal fuss. The resin inside will eventually wear out, but it's replaceable. The control valve might need rebuilding after a decade. These aren't disposable appliances, despite what some dealers suggest.

Keep an eye on salt usage patterns. Sudden increases usually signal a problem – maybe a stuck valve or worn seals. Catching issues early means the difference between a $50 repair and a $500 replacement.
