The cabinet box itself consists of four main components: the bottom, two sides, and a back panel. Simple enough, right? But here's where it gets interesting. Drawer boxes separate serious cabinet builders from weekend warriors. Yes, you can buy pre-made drawer boxes, and there's no shame in that. But building your own lets you customize dimensions exactly and choose joinery that matches your skill level. Dovetails are traditional and bombproof, but a simple rabbet joint with glue and brads works perfectly well for most applications.

Whatever joint you choose, invest in good drawer slides. Soft-close slides have become so affordable that there's no excuse for slamming drawers anymore. Full-extension slides cost a bit more but make accessing the back of deep drawers actually possible.

Finishing: Protection Meets Aesthetics

The finishing process is where impatience kills more projects than any other stage. That beautiful wood needs protection from water, grease, and the occasional flying spaghetti sauce. But slapping on a coat of polyurethane and calling it done is a recipe for disappointment.

Start with proper sanding. Yes, it's tedious. Yes, the dust gets everywhere. But the difference between 150-grit and 220-grit final sanding is the difference between "nice" and "professional." For painted cabinets, primer isn't optional—it's essential. I learned to love oil-based primer despite the smell and cleanup hassles. It seals wood tannins that would otherwise bleed through your perfect white paint six months later.

For clear finishes on wood, I've become a convert to water-based polyurethane. The old-timers at the lumber yard still give me grief, but modern water-based finishes are incredibly durable and don't yellow over time. Three thin coats, sanding lightly between each, creates a finish that can handle real kitchen use.

Installation: The Final Mile

Installing cabinets you've built yourself carries a particular kind of anxiety. This is where all your work becomes permanent, where mistakes get magnified or hidden forever. Start by finding the highest point of your floor—kitchens are never level, and fighting gravity is a losing battle.

Upper cabinets should go in first, despite what logic might suggest. It's much easier to work without base cabinets in the way. A few 2x4s and a couple of friends can create a temporary ledger to support cabinets while you secure them. Don't trust drywall anchors for cabinet installation. Find the studs, mark them clearly, and use screws long enough to bite deep into solid wood.

The secret to professional-looking installation is scribing. Those wavy walls aren't going anywhere, so your cabinets need to adapt. A simple compass and a belt sander can make your cabinets hug the wall like they grew there. Take your time with this step—rushed scribing looks worse than no scribing at all.
