Consider grain direction, especially for doors and drawer fronts. Nothing screams "amateur" like a cabinet where wood grain runs every direction like a compass gone mad.

Case Construction: Building the Box

The case forms your cabinet's skeleton. Most modern cabinets use a frameless (European) construction where the box itself provides all structure. It's efficient, maximizes interior space, and forgives minor measurement errors.

Cut your panels carefully—this is where a track saw earns its keep. If using a circular saw, a straightedge guide is non-negotiable. Those "freehand" cuts might look straight until you try assembling them.

For joining case parts, pocket screws have revolutionized cabinet making for hobbyists. Yes, traditionalists consider them cheating. Yes, they're visible inside the cabinet. But they're strong, fast, and forgiving. I've built hundred of cabinets with pocket screws that show no signs of failure after years of use.

Apply glue to all joints, even with mechanical fasteners. Glue provides long-term insurance against joint failure. Titebond II or III works perfectly—save the fancy glues for special situations.

The key to face frames? Flat assembly. Build them on a known-flat surface (not your garage floor that looks flat but isn't). Any twist in the face frame telegraphs through the entire cabinet.

Doors: Where Cabinets Show Their Character

Doors define a cabinet's style more than any other element. Shaker-style doors dominate current trends for good reason—they're clean, classic, and relatively simple to build. But don't dismiss raised panel doors; they add visual interest that flat panels can't match.

For Shaker doors, the rail-and-stile frame surrounds a flat panel. Sounds simple until you're calculating the panel dimensions to allow for wood movement. Too tight, and the panel splits the frame. Too loose, and it rattles like maracas.

I've made every door-building mistake possible. Forgot to account for the panel groove when sizing panels. Cut rails and stiles from boards with opposing grain. Built doors in winter that exploded in summer. Each failure taught valuable lessons about respecting wood movement.

Drawer Construction: The True Test

If doors show a cabinet's character, drawers reveal its quality. A smoothly operating drawer that stays aligned after years of use—that's the hallmark of thoughtful construction.

Drawer boxes don't need to be furniture-grade masterpieces. Baltic birch plywood with rabbet joints works beautifully. Yes, dovetails look impressive, but unless they're visible, save that showmanship for other projects.

Drawer slides have evolved tremendously. Full-extension soft-close slides transform the user experience. They cost more than basic slides but the difference feels like upgrading from a Yugo to a Mercedes.

The drawer front attachment method matters more than most builders realize. I prefer attaching fronts with screws from inside the drawer box. This allows adjustment after installation—crucial for achieving consistent reveals.

Shelving: Adjustable Versus Fixed

Fixed shelves are stronger and cleaner-looking. Adjustable shelves offer flexibility. I've gone back and forth over the years, finally settling on this: fixed shelves for structural members, adjustable for storage.

Shelf pin holes require consistent spacing. A drilling jig prevents the heartbreak of misaligned holes. Make your own from pegboard or buy a commercial version—either beats measuring each hole location.

For heavy loads, consider thicker shelves or adding edge banding. That 3/4" plywood shelf might support your encyclopedia collection, but it'll bow like a hammock over time.

Finishing: Protection and Beauty

Finishing intimidates many builders, but it shouldn't. Modern finishes are forgiving and durable. The key is surface preparation—no finish can overcome poor sanding or tear-out.

Sand progressively through grits. Skip from 80 to 220 grit and you'll see scratch patterns that haunt your dreams. Between coats, light sanding with 320 grit creates a surface that subsequent coats grab perfectly.

For painted cabinets, primer selection matters more than paint selection. Use a high-quality bonding primer designed for your material. That bargain primer might save five dollars but cost you hours in additional coats.

Water-based polyurethane has become my standard clear finish. It dries quickly, doesn't yellow, and stands up to household abuse. Yes, oil-based finishes have their place, but for most cabinets, modern water-based products excel.

Installation: Where Planning Pays Off

Installation separates adequate cabinets from professional results. Start by finding the high spot on your floor—everything references from there. Shim carefully; a level cabinet functions better and looks professional.

Wall mounting requires finding studs. Don't trust stud finders blindly; confirm with a finish nail. Those cabinet screws need solid purchase—drywall anchors won't support a loaded cabinet regardless of their weight rating.

For upper cabinets, a temporary ledger board saves your back and sanity. Level it carefully and your cabinets align automatically. Remove it after installation and patch the screw holes—much easier than wrestling cabinets into position.

Learning from Mistakes

Every experienced cabinet maker has a graveyard of mistakes. I once built an entire kitchen's worth of cabinets 1" too deep because I misread my own plans. Had to rebuild every door and drawer front. That expensive lesson taught me to mock up critical dimensions with cardboard before cutting expensive materials.

Another time, I edge-glued boards for a cabinet top without checking grain direction. The resulting panel cupped so badly it could hold soup. Now I obsess over grain orientation like a detective studying clues.
